Russia’s central bank digital currency (CBDC) rollout faces further delays, with a prominent economist now projecting a 2027 launch timeline. The digital ruble, originally scheduled for July 2025 implementation, was postponed indefinitely earlier this year without explanation.
Alexey Voylukov, a finance professor at Moscow’s Presidential Academy, warns adoption challenges may require substantial incentives. The comments come as European power outages highlight infrastructure vulnerabilities for digital currency systems.
